Bahamas "Free" Dining: Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free & Plant-Based Options

In recent years, the demand for more gluten-free, dairy-free, and plant-based options has grown due to many Bahamians and visitors battling allergies, chronic skin conditions like eczema, or other personal reasons. While the reasons for this increase in food intolerances and allergies are a conversation for another day (we plan to launch a health and wellness discussion series with medical professionals in the very near future), we can highlight locations that offer considerations for those with dietary restrictions.

Your best bet for gluten-free or dairy-free dining is Mexican, Greek, or Japanese/sushi restaurants, as many dishes naturally do not contain these ingredients - for example, corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas, and sushi.

Just a few restaurants that our team has been able to enjoy with a wide range of options for dietary restrictions include:

NEW PROVIDENCE

Mi&B's - Gluten & Dairy Free Options

NRG - Vegetarian, Gluten & Dairy Free Options

Shuang Ba - Gluten & Dairy Free Options

Costa & other Mexican restaurants - Gluten & Dairy Free Options (Link 2)

Meze Grill & other Greek restaurants - Gluten & Dairy Free Options

Oku & other sushi restaurants - Gluten & Dairy Free Options

Savour Fresh to Go - Can accommodate a number of dietary restrictions

GRAND BAHAMA

The Stoned Crab - Gluten & Dairy Free Options

Lux Deli - Gluten Free Options

Lignum Vitae - All Vegan

The Galley (Vegan options with notice)

We recommend letting your servers know ahead of time about allergies. Ask for recommendations, and ensure condiments meet your needs.

For Bahamian dining, we recommend keeping it simple for gluten-free and dairy-free diets with dishes like boiled fish, fried fish, conch salad, grilled conch, and grits. Just be sure to ask if the latter dishes had butter.
