Bahamian author, cultural ambassador, and lifelong Junkanoo enthusiast Randolph “Boy la la” Coakley officially launched his debut novel, The Creative Storm, on January 22 at the Educulture Junkanoo Museum and Resource Centre, located in downtown Nassau.

The launch marked the formal debut of a culturally rich and entertaining novel that introduces readers to Junkanoo, one of The Bahamas’ most powerful and celebrated traditions, through humorous, heartfelt storytelling that is deeply rooted in Bahamian identity.

The book launch featured remarks from the author, who reflected on his inspiration for the novel, his lifelong connection to Junkanoo, and the importance of preserving and sharing Bahamian culture. He also expressed pride in making the book available to a global audience through Amazon.

The event included remarks by The Hon. Mario Bowleg, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, who was joined by The Hon. Leonardo Lightbourne, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, and Mrs. Arlene Nash Ferguson, Co-Founder and Director of Educulture Bahamas, Junkanoo Museum Ltd.

Mr. Coakley was a proud recipient of the Ministry of Culture Grant, which supported the completion of The Creative Storm and underscored the book’s cultural significance and national value.

Born and raised in the historic Bain Town community, Randolph Coakley’s relationship with Junkanoo spans decades. From rushing in the tum tum sections on Bay Street during Boxing Day and New Year’s parades to performing in hotel showcases and representing the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism internationally, he has long celebrated this aspect of Bahamian artistry. After retiring from active participation in parades, Coakley continued to serve as a Junkanoo judge and festival task force member, helping to protect and preserve the tradition for future generations.

Beyond Junkanoo, Coakley represented The Bahamas as a member of the national cricket team and spent more than 30 years in the hospitality industry, welcoming visitors from around the world before transitioning into entrepreneurship and storytelling full time.

The Creative Storm follows three cruise ship couples from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden who unexpectedly find themselves in the middle of a Junkanoo parade in downtown Nassau during the early morning hours. Guided by a Bahamian named Joe Grinds, the visitors embark on a journey into the meaning, excitement, and soul of Junkanoo. Through vivid storytelling, the novel captures the beat of the drums, the brilliance of the costumes, and the pride of the Bahamian people.

Written to spark curiosity in visitors, awaken cultural pride in Bahamians, and introduce younger readers to Junkanoo’s magic, The Creative Storm serves as both a celebration and a cultural bridge.

The Creative Storm is available on Amazon.com, at Oasis at Bahamas Faith Ministries, and at Logos Bookstore in the Harbour Shopping Centre.
