From vibrant colours and intricate patterns to reflections of light and shadow, Bahamian visual artist Lillian Blades brings together an eclectic mix of materials, textures and cultural influences through her captivating mixed-media installations.

During this year's FUZE Art Fair, held as part of the Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival, Blades shared the inspiration behind her work, including two pieces titled Spectrum and Gumbo.

Much like the Caribbean itself, her creations celebrate the beauty of different elements coming together. Using acrylic, wood, fabric, paper, mirrors and aluminium wire, she creates colourful, quilt-like assemblages that reflect a fusion of cultures, traditions and artistic expression.

Blades also reflected on her early inspiration, recalling an aunt who created shell crafts and sold them in hotels, sparking her own love for working with her hands.

"I just love colour. I love pattern, textures. I'm really interested in light and reflections," she shared.

Through our Caribbean Threads series, we're continuing to spotlight the artists and chefs who brought their creativity, cultural perspectives and stories to this year's FUZE Art Fair and Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival.
