Celebrating Caribbean Culture Through Food with Top Chef Winner Tristen Epps-Long
For award-winning Trinidadian-American Chef Tristen Epps-Long, food is more than a culinary experience. It's a celebration of heritage, identity and the rich cultural traditions of the Caribbean.
The winner of Top Chef Season 22 joined an impressive lineup of culinary talent at this year's Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival, where he showcased his passion for Afro-Caribbean cuisine and the flavours that connect our islands.
During The Island Table, alongside Chef Nina Compton, Epps-Long presented a Caribbean-inspired menu featuring local seafood, grilled lobster, roasted sweet potatoes and other island favourites. He also participated in The Art of the Plate, where his featured dish was a creative Neo-Bahamian interpretation of Boiled Fish & Grits.
For Epps-Long, celebrating Caribbean cuisine on the international stage is both a privilege and a personal mission.
"Caribbean food can hold its weight to any European cuisine or any other cuisine," he shared, reflecting on his journey and the importance of representing his culture.
Beyond his culinary achievements, including his Top Chef victory, Epps-Long hopes to continue introducing audiences around the world to the beauty and diversity of Caribbean cooking.
Through our Caribbean Threads series, Poinciana Magazine explores the shared histories, cultural influences and creative expressions that connect the Caribbean. We'll continue sharing highlights from the chefs and artists we encountered at the FUZE Art Fair and Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival.
