Chef Garrette Bowe Shares Grand Bahama's Culinary Culture | Caribbean Threads
From conch and fresh tamarind to fish and panny cakes, Grand Bahama native Chef Garrette Bowe is sharing the flavours, traditions and unique culinary identity of her home with chefs from around the world.
As Executive Chef at Marcus Fish + Chop House, Chef Garrette helped welcome visiting chefs alongside restaurant owner Chef Marcus Samuelsson during the Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival, introducing them to local ingredients, traditional dishes and even a few Bahamian expressions.
One word that sparked some curiosity was "biggity," which her team had been calling her all week.
And for those wondering, biggity is a Bahamian term often used cheekily as a term of endearment to describe someone who is assertive and knows what they want.
Beyond the laughter and culinary exchanges, Chef Garrette also shared an important reminder about the diversity of Bahamian culture.
"Although we're all Bahamians, Nassau is not The Bahamas. There's so many islands, there's so many ways we all do different things."
Through our Caribbean Threads series, we'll continue highlighting the chefs and artists who shared their creativity, culture and stories during this year's FUZE Art Fair and Bahamas Culinary & Arts Festival.
