Globally, run clubs have become one of the most popular outdoor fitness experiences, blending exercise, accountability, and social connection. While some view them as a passing trend or a casual social outing, others are using run clubs as powerful tools to stay consistent with their health goals. At Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre, one junior doctor is doing just that.

Dr. Garreth Curry is currently training at Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre, and he is also the co founder of an organization based run club that places wellness at the center of workplace culture. For Dr. Curry, health goes beyond the absence of illness. “Health means the constant state of maintaining physical, psychological and spiritual wellness,” he shared.

Fitness, he explained, plays a vital role in achieving that balance. “Fitness has been linked to all types of health,” Dr. Curry said. On a physical level, regular exercise helps control blood pressure, glucose levels, and weight. Psychologically, it contributes to “improved sleep, improved mood and helps to reduce stress.”

As someone who has always enjoyed exercise, Dr. Curry saw an opportunity to extend those benefits to his colleagues. “I have always been an exercise enthusiast,” he said. “I wanted to have a way for all employees at SRC to have a club that helps with wellness.”

That idea became reality in late 2025 when the SRC Run Club officially launched. “We wanted to get fit and do it as a group,” Dr. Curry explained. “We thought it would be fantastic for fellowship among all levels of staff at SRC to join in too.” While membership is limited to SRC staff, the club maintains an open and welcoming spirit. Family, friends, and loved ones are encouraged to attend events, reinforcing the club’s mission of fitness for mind, body, and soul.

Beyond structured runs, Dr. Curry emphasizes that fitness is accessible in many forms. He notes that community initiatives are becoming more common. “We were pleasantly surprised to see that each weekend there seems to be a fitness initiative going on,” he said, encouraging people to check social media for events. He also stresses safety and support, advising people to exercise with others when using public parks.

At its core, the SRC Run Club reflects Dr. Curry’s belief that movement is more than exercise. It is connection, consistency, and care for the whole person. As he simply puts it, “Come join us!”
